About Carly

I am a psychologist. Quite unusual, I know. But I’m not the fuddy-duddy, pipe-smoking, tweed-wearing stereotype.

I am young. I swear. I drink. I dance. I know what twerking is. I talk about sex a lot. And love. I have had my heart broken and have made some terrible relationship choices.

I am just like you. Except that my job involves listening to people’s stories. And my training offers me certain insights, greater empathy and the use of some deep-ass theory.

I started the Carly’s Couch blog because I am passionate about connecting with people and I wanted to breakdown the misconceptions that all psychologists have to be boring, old and flawless. As I learn to embrace my flaws and human vulnerability I want to encourage others to do the same.

Qualifications:

I have a Masters in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cape Town (2011), and worked previously at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital (2012) and Far East Rand Hospital (2013). I moved to Berlin in 2014 where I worked in private practice for two years before moving back to South Africa in 2016.

I am registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa(HPCSA) as well as the Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa (BHF).
