Okay wow, where has this year disappeared to already?! It’s almost a week into June and yet I feel like I’m only now getting used to saying 2014…

It is definitely true that time speeds up as you get older. Each week seems to go by in a flash. The treadmill of life is sweeping me off my feet, as I dart from one event to another, one appointment to another. On top of that, our digital lives have never been more stressful! In between real-life meetings and arrangements, I find my time is taken up with attending to emails, checking my twitter and facebook timelines, replying to messages, etc.

Now as much as my mother would have me believe that this digital dependency is a choice and I can “go off the grid” if I wanted to, the reality is that this is how life is now and it would be near impossible to operate in the real world without these digital platforms. However, I do think that we need to take time off from our digital devices, especially ones we use for work.

I was reminded of this recently after reading a post by Gala Darling on the need for Sunday to be declared a day of rest and fun, free from work-related activities including checking emails and replying to tweets, etc. It really clicked with me because I am so guilty of this! I am sure a lot of you are as well. Since having a smart phone, I find it really difficult to “switch off” from notifications, even when out with friends or over the weekend. There is something about that red alert message that irks me to the point of distraction. Also, very often I find that the week has been so busy with meetings and appointments, that I almost rely on the weekend to catch up on work I didn’t get to during the week. After reading Gala’s words though, I am determined to change this habit.

And if the message wasn’t clear enough, I then received a note from the universe that went like this:

In the beginning:
Work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, play.

Upon discovering how to spiritually do more, be more, and have more:
Work, play, work, work, play, work, play, work, work, play.

Upon discovering you don’t have to do more, be more, and have more:
Play, play, nap, play, play, play, play, nap, play, play, play.

Carly, let your player out –
    The Universe

So, Mr Universe, I hear you! I need to let my hair down a bit more. It’s been a very focused, driven few months and I have been spending pretty much all my energy on work-related activities. But I know I need to have more balance in order to live my best life.

It’s FRIDAY after all! So, to all of y’all you have been working (or as I like to say twerking) too hard, it’s time to get loooooose. Spend this weekend enjoying yourselves. Take walks, read a book, watch sport with your mates, throw a dinner party, dance your asses off, whatever. PLAY is the word of the day!
