Carly’s Couch has been expanding over the last few months. Our clients can now choose from a network of therapists who offer a diverse range of special interests and years of experience. In the last blog post I introduced Mariam Parker to you. You can find out more about Mariam’s special interests here.

Today I am super pleased to introduce you to another therapist in our network. Along with us clinical psychologists, we now have a qualified educational psychologist who we can refer clients to. An educational psychologist is trained to provide psychological services to children, including educational/scholastic assessments and play therapy.

Debby Kempthorne has a Masters in Educational Psychology from the University of Stellenbosch. She offers a range of psychological services, including cognitive and scholastic assessments, career exploration, therapy for children and adolescents, and parental support and guidance.

This is what Debby has to say:

I am excited to join the Couch with Carly!

Children are my passion and have been the central focus of all my work experience. How often as a parent have you thought to yourself, “if only my child came with a manual”? It is not easy being a parent these days, with constant demands from every aspect of life. Fear not, as an Educational Psychologist, I can help you navigate the challenges you and your child may face.

I believe everyone has a story to share if one takes the time to listen. Transforming the preconceived notion of therapy and school, I provide a safe, empathetic and nurturing environment for your child, be it the couch or even the floor, whatever makes them feel comfortable! Learning potential lies within everyone, in order to unlock that one needs to understand the child and their learning currency. For this reason, I am constantly researching and finding creative and fun ways to remediate any barriers to learning. When engaging with children I love how I can apply my creativity, nurturing ability and patience to assist them in reaching their full potential, increasing their confidence and self-worth while being mindful of their unique contextual factors of influence.

Meeting an Educational Psychologist need not be intimidating, although I know most are a little nervous, and that’s normal to feel. Give me the opportunity to work with you and your child to alleviate any academic or developmental stumbling blocks you may encounter.

I specialize in sandplay therapy, play therapy, career assessments, educational assessments, school readiness, developmental disorders, learning difficulties and disorders, parental support as well as life changes affecting children.

I look forward to welcoming you and your child to the couch!
